Smith placed seventh at last weekend’s NCAA Midwest Region Championships, thus needing the at-large berth to advance. A Bemidji, Minn., native, Smith has cleared a best of 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches this season to rank second in school history.
Redshirt freshman Liz Podominick was granted an at-large berth in the discus and now will compete in her first NCAA track nationals in two events. Podominick won both the shot put and discus at the recent Big Ten Championships but only automatically qualified for the NCAAs in the shot put with a fourth-place finish at the Regional meet. The Lakeville, Minn., native placed eighth in the discus at the Midwest Region meet to require the at-large bid. She does, however, own the 14th-best throw in the nation this season in the discus at 174-11. Her best throw in the shot put is 52-8.
The other two Gophers who will compete in their first NCAA Championships are sophomore Emily Brown (West Allis, Wis.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and freshman Liz Roehrig (Chilton, Wis.) in the high jump.
