The University of Minnesota men’s hockey team exceeded all expectations in 2004-05, posting a third-place finish in the WCHA and making its 19th all-time appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four. Picked to place fifth in the WCHA , the Maroon and Gold finished in a tie for third place in the conference with Wisconsin and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. At the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four in Columbus, Ohio, Minnesota lost 4-2 to North Dakota in the semifinals to see UM’s four-game Frozen Four winning streak come to an end. The Maroon and Gold finished the 2004-05 season with its most wins (28) since the 2002-03 National Champion Golden Gophers posted 28 victories. Minnesota's senior class of Judd Stevens, Barry Tallackson, Jake Fleming, Garrett Smaagaard, Jerrid Reinholz and Justin Johnson finished their careers as one of the most productive classes in the history of Minnesota's Pride on Ice. Together, the six seniors won two NCAA titles and two WCHA Final Five crowns, appeared in four NCAA Tournaments and three Frozen Fours, and won over 70 percent of their games in the last four years. The Golden Gophers were the nation's top-ranked team for seven weeks of the 2004-05 season.
