MTF: John Albert Honored as Academic All-American

John Albert, was named an Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. Albert, a high jumper, was named to the Academic All-America Second Team in the University Division. This is the second time Albert has earned Academic All-America honors, garnering first team accolades in 2004.

Albert captured his second career Big Ten high jump title, winning the 2005 conference outdoor crown with a clearance of 7 feet, ˝ inch. He also claimed the event title at the SEC vs. Big Ten, Gatorade Classic, clearing a season-best height of 7-1 ˝ and qualified to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships for a third straight year. Albert, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, recently received the U of M’s Top-Five GPA award for maintaining one of the highest cumulative grade-point-averages in the entire athletics department. The junior from Bloomington, Minn. is majoring in business and boasts a 3.818 GPA.

Albert was among 46 male student-athletes honored with the national academic distinction. In order to be eligible to for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and must be a starter or an important reserve for their team. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America teams since 1952.
