WTF: Competition Gets Underway Today at NCAA Track Championships

The NCAA Track & Field Championships
Four Golden Gophers, Emily Brown, Liz Podominick, Liz Roehrig and Andrea Smith, will represent the University of Minnesota women's track & field team in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Alex G. Spanos Sprts Complex in Sacramento, Calif., June 8-11.
NCAA Track & Field Championships Televised on Delay Basis
The 2005 NCAA Track & Field Championships will be televised on CBS on a tape-delayed basis on Saturday, June 18 at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Brown Cruises to Championships
Sophomore Emily Brown smashed her own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by over five seconds at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet, qualifying for her first NCAA Championships with a second-place finish in the event. Brown was clocked at 10 minutes, 24.02 seconds, resetting her record time in the steeplechase for a third time this season. The West Allis, Wis. native has lowered the school record by over 20 seconds. Entering the season, the school record time was 10:44.11.
Podominick to Compete in Two Events
Freshman Liz Podominick automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put by placing fourth at the NCAA Midwest Regionals with a season-best throw of 52-8.
After finishing eighth in the discus at Regionals with a mark of 162-1, Podominick was granted an at-large berth to the NCAA’s, and will now compete in her first national meet in two events.
Roehrig Clears the Bar-rier
Freshman Liz Roehrig will compete in the high jump at the NCAA’s. Roehrig finished in a four-way tie for third-place at the Midwest Regional meet, clearing a height of 5-9 1/4 . The school’s best ever high jumper then finished third in a jump-off, clearing 5-8 3/4, to earn the fifth qualifying spot for the national meet.
Smith Vaults into NCAA’s
Freshman Andrea Smith earned an at-large berth to compete in the pole vault at the NCAA Championships. Smith placed seventh at last weekend’s NCAA Midwest Regional meet, needing the at-large berth to advance. The Bemidji, Minn. native has cleared a season-best height of 13-1 1/2 this season, ranking second in school history.
