WSD: Tukey Wins 800 Free At USA Swimming Champions Series

Tukey posted an outstanding swim in the 800 free, posting a time of 9:00.31. She touched out Hannah Whitehead by just .08 seconds to pick up the victory. Incoming freshman Kate Orbon also scored, placing eighth in 9:16.59. Sophomore Amy Killpatrick finished 17th in 9:31.83 and senior Cecile Lamour finished 50th in 10:02.05.
In the 100 freestyle, senior Kate Hardt led Minnesota's contigent, touching the wall sixth in 59.25. Senior Sarah Perrott qualified for the B Final and ended up placing 12th in 58.84. Junior Val Tukey was the other Gopher to reach the evening session, finishing 21st in 59.74. Other Minnesota finishers included: Jenny Hasling (24th, 1:00.09), Jennifer Chang (27th, 1:00.18), Katherine Marshall (69th, 1:02.09), Katie Wind (85th, 1:02.77), Jamie Howard (92nd, 1:02.93) and Emma Sinkler (122nd, 1:03.93).
Junior Julia Quinn finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:37.11 to post the Gophers' best result. Senior Mary Patrek won the B Final heat with a time of 2:41.56 to finish ninth. Howard reached the C Final, placing 24th overall in 2:49.05. Erika Bjorklund (31st, 2:51.00) and Katie Proell (57th, 2:54.39) rounded out Minnesota's lineup.
The Gophers had three competitors in the 200 butterfly, led by junior Lindsey St. Martin who touched the wall in 2:27.05 to finish 22nd. Killpatrick placed 29th in 2:29.46 and Lamour was 55th in 2:40.29.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. for the prelims and 6 p.m. for the finals.
