WHK: National Champions Invited to White House July 12

TThe two-time national champion University of Minnesota women's hockey team has been invited to the White House on Tuesday, July 12 to be honored for winning the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four Championship. The Golden Gophers will be recognized by President George W. Bush in a formal ceremony at the White House.

The Gophers won their second straight national championship on March 27, defeating Harvard, 4-3 in Durham, N.H. Natalie Darwitz scored the game-winning goal with one minute and eight seconds remaining in the third period. The Gophers defeated Dartmouth, 7-2 in the national semifinal to advance to the title game. Minnesota also won the Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season and tournament championship. The Maroon and Gold posted a 36-2-2 overall record and a 25-1-2 mark in league action.

The Minnesota travel party will depart Monday, July 11 at 3:30 p.m., from the Hubert H Humphrey International Airport. Following the ceremony at the White House, the Gophers will have lunch with selected members of Congress at 12:30 p.m., and partake in a tour of the capitol at 2:30. The team will return to Minneapolis that evening.
