WSD: Gophers Compete in Third Day of Summer Nationals

cThe University of Minnesota women's swimming team was in full swing during the fourth of the five-day 2005 ConocoPhillips National Championships, held in Irvine, Calif. Minnesota had six swimmers compete in today's event, including two making the finals.

Former Gopher Keri Hehn chipped in a preliminary time of 1:10.36 to finish sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke event. Hehn competed in the A Final that evening.

In the 400-meter freestyle, the Gophers had four swimmers in the event. Incoming freshmen Christine Jennings and Yuen Kobayashi led Minnesota. Jennings qualified for the C Final, placing 19th overall. Jennings clocked a time of 4:18.38, qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Trials. She bettered her time in the finals, touching the wall in 4:18.12. Kobayashi finished the event with a time of 4:19.77 and a 25th-place showing overall. Valerie Tukey and Kate Hardt finished 58th and 59th overall with times of 4:27.34 and 4:27.91, respectively.

Katie Wind competed in the 100- meter backstroke in the preliminaries. After a swim-off, Wind finished in 29th place and a time of 1:05.28.

Tomorrow marks the final day of competition. Some events included are the 50 free, the 1500 free and the 200 IM.
