afte The Golden Gopher soccer team (3-1-2) played to a 0-0 tie against South Dakota State (2 -2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. It was Minnesota’s first scoreless tie since Oct. 23, 1994 against Marquette. Senior goalkeeper Molly Schneider recorded her third shutout in six starts this season.

“I thought we played very well today, but were just unable to finish,” head coach Mikki Denney Wright said. “We’re not going to get more opportunities than we had in this game. I’m glad we were able to get the shutout. In these types of games, one mistake can cost you.”

Minnesota spent most of the first half in the Jackrabbit zone, but was unable to capitalize. The Golden Gophers held a 6-3 edge in shot attempts in the first half and a dominating 8 -0 edge in corner kicks.

In the second half, the Golden Gophers had several opportunities to break the tie. Freshman Lindsey Schwartz broke free along the baseline and her centering pass went through the hands of goalkeeper Jenn Davis. Senior Becky Dellaria was there for the rebound, but was unable to get a shot past the SDSU defense.

In the second overtime, the Jackrabbits nearly stole the victory. Heather Hill fired a shot from 35 yards out that hit off the crossbar. South Dakota State hit two posts in the game.

Schneider stopped all seven shots she faced, including three during sudden death overtime. It was Schneider’s eighth career shutout in 24 starts for Minnesota.

Minnesota held a 17-15 advantage in shot attempts, led by Schwartz’s team-high six shots. Nine different Golden Gophers recorded a shot in the contest. Minnesota also held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Golden Gophers return to the road next week to wrap up their non-conference schedule. Minnesota will face No. 24 Dartmouth on Friday and Villanova on Sunday. The Golden Gophers open the Big Ten season at home against Purdue on Friday, Sept. 23.
