“Obviously we are disappointed with our performance all weekend,” head coach Mikki Denney Wright said. “We played better than we did on Friday night, but at this point, we have to focus on opening the Big Ten season next weekend.”
Following a scoreless first half, the Wildcats took control late in the second half. Nikki Mabery’s crossing pass was fielded by Grow. She chipped it into the far corner of the goal for the eventual gamewinner.
The Golden Gophers nearly tied the match with less than a minute to play. Off a corner kick, freshman Lindsey Schwartz’s header appeared to cross the goal line, but it was waved off.
Minnesota managed just two shots in the contest as the Wildcats held a 17-2 advantage in attempts. Senior goalkeeper Molly Schneider recorded six saves in the defeat.
Minnesota will attempt to break the attendance record at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium next Friday in its Big Ten opener against Purdue. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The attendance record is 1,432 set in the stadium’s debut against Arizona State on Sept. 4, 1999. Tickets are only one dollar for Friday’s match.
