MSD: Gophers Start Season Hosting Alumni Meet

In the men's 200-yard medley relay, the alumni group of Diego Urreta, Terry Silkaitis, Christian Anguis and Neil Osten defeated the Gopher A group of Dan Berve, Andrew Knoechel, Ales Volcansek and Igor Cerensek. The alum combined for a time of 1:30.75, while the Gopher team finished in 1:30.89.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Michael Woodson won the event in 53.15, defeating former Gopher Scott Tripps in 53.95. Russ Payne won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1: 00.75, while Cerensek finished second in 1:06.09.
Berve took the top spot in the 50-yard butterfly for the men in a time of 22.21, followed by Lucas Peterson in 23.15. Former Gopher Erik Esbjornsson won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.05 and Volcansek led the Gophers with a second-place finish in 21.29.
Silkaitis won the 100 free (44.53), followed by former Gopher Sean McCaffrey (45.98). Freshman Gopher Mike Holmes won the men's 50 back in a time of 25.85, followed by Jimmer Dorweiler in 25.91.
Andrew Knoechel competed in the 50 breast, clocking a time of 26.95. Former Gopher Raymond Hakomaki, who competed with the swim team in the 1940's, competed and clocked a time of 51.83. Esbjornosson won his second race of the evening in the 25 free. He touched the wall in 9.70, while Osten was second in 9.76.
Matt Engel won the 100 fly in 51.58. Adam Mitchell won the men's 100 IM with a time of 51.30.
Along with a variety of current and former Golden Gopher swimmers, three members were inducted into the Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame. Men's diver P.J. Bogart, women's swimmer Gretchen Hegener and men's swimmer Paul Nelsen were all introduced during the meet and honored for their accomplishments.
The Gophers are on hiatus until the intrasquad meet, Oct. 15. The meet is slated for 1 p.m. at the University Aquatic Center.
