WSD: Gophers Kick Off Season hosting the Alumni Meet

In the 50-yard butterfly, the alumni took the top three spots. Katy Coombe (24.84) won the race, while Jennifer Hasling led the Gophers with a fourth-place finish overall (25.95).
Coombe won her second event of the night, this time in the 50 free. The school record holder in the event, Coombe touched the wall with a time of 24.58, while Meredith McCarthy finished second in 24.66.
Jenna Gamble and Matenaer each competed in the 100-yard free, finishing in 55.18 and 56.40, respectively. Jaclyn Gazvoda won the 50-yard back when she finished in 28.58. Lindsey St. Martin placed second out of 12, clocking a time of 28.67.
The Gophers had six swimmers compete in the 50-yard breaststroke. Erika Bjorklund won the event (31.45), followed by captain Bridget McCoy (31.95) and Katie Proell (31.95). Freshmen swimmers Kait Strickland (34.22), Katie Brosseau (24.27) and Andrea Rosenberg (34.62) finished fourth, fifth and sixth.
Hasling won the 25-yard free (11.27), while freshman Erin Holtmeyer finished second in 11.37 and captain Sarah Perrott finished third in 11.48. Former Gopher Sarah Solfelt won the women's 100 fly 52.08, while Coombe gained her third win of the evening in the 100 individual medley. Coombe finished in a time of 55.21, while former Gopher Shauna Riggs placed second (56.07) and Kate Hardt finished third (1:00.68).
Along with a variety of current and former Golden Gopher swimmers, three members were inducted into the Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame. Men's diver P.J. Bogart, women's swimmer Gretchen Hegener and men's swimmer Paul Nelsen were all introduced during the meet and honored for their accomplishments.
The women's team's next action is Oct. 8, as the Gophers head to Lawerence Kan. To compete against Kansas. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
