Mitchell Wins Two Events To Open Big Ten Triple Duals

seven of 11 events in the first day of Big Ten triple dual action with Wisconsin and
No. 15 Purdue this evening at University Aquatic Center. Senior Adam
Mitchell won two
individual events to lead Minnesota to a 160-45 lead over Wisconsin and a 117-88
edge over Purdue. Purdue also leads Wisconsin 133-72.
Mitchell cruised to individual wins in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley. In
the 200 free, he touched the wall in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:37.37, easily ahead of
Purdue’s Romain Maire (1:39.95). Tyler Schmidt finished third in a
time of 1:40.18. In
the 200 individual medley, Mitchell clocked a winning time of 1:49.27, also an NCAA
B-cut time. Purdue’s Giordan Pagioli was second in 1:51.22.
In the evening’s first event, Minnesota coasted to a win in the 200 medley relay. The
Gophers’ squad of Dan Berve, Colin
Lee-To, Neil Osten and Igor
Cerensek touched in
1:28.92 to beat Purdue’s time of 1:29.84. The Gophers ended the evening
competition with a win in the 800 freestyle relay as well. The team of Cerensek,
Schmidt, Mike Woodson and Evan Bernier posted the best
time by over seconds in
6:37.80 while Wisconsin was a distant second.
Minnesota posted the top two finishers in the 1000 freestyle, led by senior Travis
Beckerle. He was able to coast to the wall with a time of 9:16.06 while teammate Zach
Wood took second place in a time of 9:26.16. The Gophers took the top three spots
in the 100 backstroke, headed by sophomore David
Plummer in a time of 49.51.
Berve was righ behind in 49.60 and Woodson was third in 50.34.
In the 100 breaststroke, Purdue’s Pagioli posted the victory in 54.74 while Lee-To
touched second in 55.36 and Drew Knoechel was third in 56.27. Wisconsin’s Scott
Rice was the winner in the 200 butterfly in 1:50.36 while freshman Adam
Weis paced
the Gophers in fourth place (1:51.73).
In 1-meter diving action, junior Shaun Kennedy led the Gophers
in third place with a
score of 260.55 while Purdue’s Shaun LoBue was first with 286.10 points. Kennedy
posted Minnesota’s best finish in 3-meter action as well with 325.40 points to take
fifth.
The meet continues tomorrow at noon at University Aquatic Center with nine events.
