Minnesota junior Katie Howery won the Jack’s Run on Saturday at the Les Bolstad Golf Course, covering the 5-kilometer course in a time of 18 minutes, 54.0 seconds. The run honored Jack Johnson, the Golden Gophers’ longtime equipment manager, who passed away last February after a battle with cancer. Proceeds from the even will benefit the Jack Johnson Endowed Scholarship, as well as cancer research in Minnesota.
Nearly 100 runners, both men and women, took to the course. Several teams that Johnson worked with were present in numbers, including the rowing, wrestling and track teams. Joey Keillor was the first male finisher, clocking a time of 16:07.7.
Howery earned a spot on the Gophers’ squad for next week’s Big Ten Championships with her finish. She was followed by freshman Megan Duwell in second in a time of 18:54.8 and sophomore Arielle DePrenger-Gottfried in third in 18:57.2.
The Big Ten meet will be run at Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 29.
