Maroon Defeats Gold, 71-63, In First Intrasquad Scrimmage

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with its Maroon and Gold scrimmage on Friday at Williams Arena, with the Gold team coming out on top 71-63.
Junior guard and co-captain Lawrence McKenzie led Gold with 19 points and seven assists and playing all 40 minutes in his first time in a Gophers uniform.
Freshman Damian Johnson had the most impressive stat line in the scrimmage, turning in a well-rounded 11 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
The scrimmage's high scorer was junior forward Dan Coleman, who scored 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds for the Maroon. Junior Spencer Tollackson scored 15 points and added three blocks playing alongside Coleman. Freshman Lawrence Westbrook also had 15 points and three assists for the Maroon.
Other players in double figures were Brandon Smith (12 points), Engen Nurumbi (11) and Limar Wilson (10), all for the Gold.
Maroon shot a combined 41.8 percent from the field, while Gold shot 45.5 percent. The Maroon team led 36-31 at half.
The Gophers will next take on Bemidji State in an exhibition match-up on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Williams Arena.
