Gophers Lose First Two Matches at Callaway Match Play Championships

The University of Minnesota men's golf team finished the first day at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championships with a 1-1 record. Minnesota was defeated 4-1 in the first round by second-seeded Georgia and was defeated by Arizona State by a 2-1-2 decision. The Championships are being held at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
In the first round, Georgia jumped out to a 3-0 lead before three-time Gopher All-American Bronson La'Cassie defeated Michael Green 3 and 2. Sophomore Victor Almstrom was defeated in the final match by Adam Mitchell, 2 and 1. Sophomores Patrick Datz, Andy Paulson and Robbie Kelley also lost their first round matches.
In the consolation bracket vs. Arizona State, the Gophers lost a hard-fought battle with the Sun Devils 2-1-2. The two teams halved two matches with Almstrom fighting back from being 2 down to halve his match with Erik Cooper. Freshman Thomas Campbell playing in his first match day also halved his match with Fredrik Andersson. Sophomore Andrew Paulson was the only Gopher winner defeating Phil Telliard 2 and 1. La'Cassie lost 2 up and Datz was defeated 6 and 5.
Minnesota will play Auburn tomorrow morning in the consolation B semifinals.
