OUTSIDE COMPETITION
Big Ten Rule 17.02.9 states that all student-athletes must receive written approval from the athletics director prior to practicing or competing in outside competitions during the academic year. The NCAA and Big Ten define competition as a pre-scheduled game or tournament in any sport governed by the NCAA. Thus, a walk-on hockey player may not participate in a pre-scheduled softball tournament without permission, but could participate in a disc-golf tournament or a pickup basketball game at the YMCA (since it is not pre-arranged). The forms for outside competition approval can be found on the compliance website under NCAA Bylaw 14: Eligibility.
The intent of this rule is to make sure that the athletic department is aware of all outside competitions that student-athletes are competing in to ensure no rules are broken and missed class time is kept to a minimum.
Each year, the University of Minnesota self reports several violations involving outside competitions. Most of these violations are a result of someone forgetting to complete the form, so please complete this form as son as you are aware of student-athlete competing for an outside team.
If you have any additional questions, please contact the Compliance Office.
