Golden Gophers Open 2006-07 Season With Alumni Meet

The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team began the 2006-07 season with the annual Alumni Meet this evening at University Aquatic Center. Current Golden Gophers Dan Berve, Rob Schaefer, Mike Woodson, Drew Knoechel, Ales Volcansek and Colin Lee-To each won individual events on the first evening of competition this season.
To open the meet, the Minnesota C 200 medley relay of Peter Mullee, Mark Solfelt, Alex Wold and Ray Betuzzi touched first in a time of 1:26.02, easily winning by nearly five seconds. In the second event, 2006 grad John Schmidt won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 320.20, besting senior Shaun Kennedy who was second with a tally of 279.65. In the next event, alumnus Scott Tripps took the 100 backstroke in 53.54 while freshman Kevin Ewald was second in 54.57.
Freshman Rob Schaefer won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.88 and senior Dan Berve won the 50 butterfly in 21.97. Gopher 23-time All-American Terry Silkaitis came back to Minneapolis and won the 50 free in 20.94, narrowly edging sophomore Colin Lee-To, who finished in 20.96. Silkaitis also won the 100 freestyle in 47.01, touching out Solfelt, who posted a time of 47.08.
Junior Mike Woodson won the 50 backstroke in 23.91 and senior Drew Knoechel won the 50 breaststroke in 26.09. Senior Ales Volcansek beat a field of 13 Golden Gophers in the 25 freestyle with a time of 9.78 and Lee-To claimed the win in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a 55.51.
Minnesota hosts the annual Intrasquad meet next Saturday at 1 p.m. at University Aquatic Center.
