McCarthy and Johnson Tally New Pool Records on Day One of B1G Triple Dual

EVANSTON, IL. – The University of Minnesota swimming and diving programs opened up Big Ten triple dual action today to close out the regular season, collecting five individual event wins and tallying two new pool records throughout the first 20 events of the two day meet.

 

After day one, the Minnesota women lead Purdue 110.50-56.50 and trail Northwestern 77.00-89.00. The Minnesota men trail Purdue 72.00-95.00 and Northwestern 65.00-102.00. 

 

The triple dual kicked off with platform diving in the early afternoon. Vivi Del Angel topped the charts in the women's competition, tallying a score of 331.30 and finishing over 48 points ahead of second place to take the event victory.

 

Katie McCarthy opened up the individual swimming events with a splash, tallying a new pool record at the Norris Aquatics Center to win the women's 1000 free with a time of 9:40.49.

 

Luke Brennan followed it up soon after with a win of his own in the men's 1000 free, topping the heat sheet with a time of 9:00.82.

 

Kamdyn Periat went on to win the women's 100 back for the seventh event of the day, tallying a 52.75 to edge out the first place finish.

 

Jacob Johnson tallied a second new pool record for the Gophers on day one, etching his name into the Norris Aquatics Center record books with a 1:41.68 finish in the men's 200 fly.

 

Day two of the action kicks off in West Lafayette, IN. tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM (CT) with men's and women's 3-meter diving before heading back to Evanston, IL. for the conclusion of the swimming events beginning at 11:00 AM (CT).
