The No. 4/6 University of Minnesota women's hockey team earned a 4-3 win over non-conference opponent, Niagara, today at Ridder Arena. The Golden Gophers scored two goals in the first and two in the second for their seventh win of the season. Niagara drops to 4-5-2 overall, while Minnesota improves to 7-3-1 and 6-1-0 at home.

Niagara got on the board first when Christina Jablonski scored at 5:59 in the first period. However, Erica McKenzie started the Gopher scoring drive when she scored at 7:16 of the first period. McKenzie tipped in an Anya Miller snapshot, while Bobbi Ross tallied the second assist. Less then two minutes later, the Gophers tacked on their second goal of the period at 9:15 in the second. Andrea Nichols netted her seventh goal of the season on a power-play attempt. Whitney Graft started the play at the left circle and passed it to Jenelle Philipczyk, who was in the back corner. Philipczyk found Nichols at the doorstep as she scored her first power-play goal of the season.

Niagara tied the game at 1:09 of the second period, but Minnesota added two goals in the period to regain the lead. Brittany Francis scored her second goal of the season, first on the power-play, at 8:17 in the second. Francis tipped in a Melanie Gagnon slap shot from the point. It was Gagnon's 10th assist of the season. Ross added a goal of her own and second point of the game at 17:08 in the second. Niagara tried to clear the puck out of the zone. Miller picked up the loose puck at center ice and banked it off the far side. Ross picked up the puck and brought it into the zone and fired in a shot for her fourth goal of the season.

The only scoring in the third period came from Niagara at 17:38 from Frances McPhail on an unassisted play. The Purple Eagles tried to tie the game by pulling their goalie, Allison Rutledge, but Minnesota added the pressure. Nichols brought the puck in the zone, but Alison Malty was charged with a hooking penalty to avoid the empty-net attempt. With Rutledge re-entering the game, Minnesota held off the Purple Eagles for the remainder of the game.

Minnesota was two-for-seven on the power-play, while keeping NU scoreless with the extra attacker in five attempts. Minnesota had 38 shots, 15 on the power play, while holding Niagara to 22 shots and eight on the power play. Gopher goalie Brittony Chartier had 19 saves and collected her seventh win of the season at 7-3-1.

The Maroon and Gold will look for the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m.
