Gopher Women's Hockey Defeats Niagara, 3-1

The No. 4/6 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team earned a 3-1 win over non-conference opponent, Niagara, today at Ridder Arena. With the victory, the Golden Gophers swept the Purple Eagles winning 4-3 on Saturday. The Gophers improve to 8-3-1 overall, while Niagara dropped to 4-6-2. Bobbi Ross led the Gophers with two goals, while Brittany Francis had two assists.

Minnesota and Niagara went scoreless in the first period with the Gophers holding the lead in shots. Minnesota had nine in the period and did not allow a Purple Eagle shot on goal until nearly the 10-minute mark of the period.

After a slow start in the first period, Minnesota ignited and scored three goals in the second period. After Minnesota successfully killed of a Niagara five-on-three attempt, Kelli Blankenship capitalized on a Purple Eagle turnover and scored her seventh goal of the season at 2:32 in the second period. Blankenship brought the puck into the zone and beat a Niagara defensemen around the corner and shot it above goalie Allison Rutledge’s right shoulder. Bobbi Ross added to the Gophers’ lead when she scored at 9:08 of the second period. Ross scored on her own rebound attempt in the slot, while Brittany Francis and Gigi Marvin were credited with the assists. Ross scored her second goal in the period and third of the series when she rifled in a shot, top-shelf, for her sixth goal of the season. Minnesota and Niagara both doubled its shots with the Gophers capitalizing on three of 21. NU had 15 shots in the period, but held scoreless.

Niagara got on the board at 6:02 of the third period when Lisa Agozzino scored her second goal of the season, but the Gophers held off the Purple Eagles for the remainder of the game.

Brittony Chartier had a stellar performance in goal for the Gophers, improving her record to 8-3-1. She had five saves in the first, 15 in the second and six in the third for 26 saves.

After playing with the U.S. Select Team at the Four Nation’s Cup, Marvin arrived in the Twin Cities area on Sunday morning and dressed for today’s game. She returned to the Gopher lineup after winning a silver medal with Team USA in Kitchener, Ont. Marvin scored two goals in her Four Nation’s Cup debut and earned a silver medal.

Erica McKenzie, who suffered a knee injury in yesterday’s game against Niagara, sat out today’s game. She is estimated to be out for two to four weeks.

Minnesota returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend as it competes in a home-and-home series against St. Cloud State, Nov. 17-18. Friday’s game is set for a 2 p.m., while Saturday’s contest is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
