Defending national champion Dustin Schlatter defeated second-ranked Matt Storniolo of Oklahoma, 3-0, at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Monday night in Dallas, Texas. In a highly anticipated match-up between the nation’s top two wrestlers at 149 pounds, Schlatter scored a first period takedown and added a late escape to come away with the 3-0 victory.

Schlatter shot in low on a duck under to score the first period takedown and a 2-0 lead. He missed an opportunity to score back points later in the period when Storniolo attempted a rollover, but he continued to control and maintained the 2-0 advantage at the first break. Schlatter nearly scored another takedown with an ankle pick in the second, but it was waved off as the wrestlers moved off the mat. Schlatter started down to begin the third period. Storniolo rode him throughout but was unable to score, and Schlatter got the escape with 10 seconds remaining to make the final 3-0.

The victory was Schlatter’s second over Storniolo in his career, as he also claimed a 5-1 decision over the Oklahoma wrestler in the semifinals of last year’s NCAA Championships.

Roger Kish had a disappointing night in the 184-pound match, falling 10-2 to top-ranked Jake Herbert of Northwestern.

Scoring opportunities were at a minimum throughout much of the first period, but after a late scramble, Herbert scored a takedown and a near fall to jump ahead 5-0. After Kish started on top to begin the second period, Herbert got the escape to extend his lead to 6-0. Kish scored a takedown to make it 6-2, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Herbert got an escape late in the second and added a takedown in the third to take a 9-2 advantage. A bonus point for riding time gave Herbert the major decision.

It was the first meeting between Kish and Herbert, who moved up to 184 pounds this year after claiming the Big Ten title and an NCAA runner-up finish at 174 a season ago.

Tonight’s event was the 41st annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps. The exhibition meet attempts to pit the nation’s top two wrestlers at each weight class in a dual meet format.

Minnesota will travel to Albany, N.Y., this weekend to take part in the Northeast Duals.
