Chartier and Ross Earn WCHA Weekly Honors

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has announced that Bobbi Ross (Verwood, Sask.) and Brittony Chartier (Saskatoon, Sask.) have earned player of the week honors for their performances against Minnesota Duluth last weekend. Ross was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, while Chartier earned WCHA Defensive Player of the Week accolades. It is the second straight week the Gophers have earned a weekly conference award after Kelli Blankenship was named WCHA Rookie of the Week two weeks ago.
Ross, a junior forward and team captain, scored two goals and an assist in the Minnesota Golden Gophers’ 5-3 upset win over then-No. 4 Minnesota Duluth last Friday. On her first shot on goal, Ross scored the Gophers’ first goal on an unassisted play. Ross and the Gophers erased a two-goal deficit when she then added an assist on a power-play goal to put the Gophers up, 3-2. After UMD answered, Ross scored the shorthanded and game-winning goal at 4:17 in the third period. It was Ross’ second career gamewinner and first shorthanded goal against the Bulldogs.

Chartier, a sophomore goalie, earned two wins against Minnesota Duluth last weekend to improve her record to 6-3-1. In the second game of the series, Chartier stopped all 26 UMD shots on goal, including 13 in the third period, to lead the Gophers to a 1-0 win and the series sweep. Chartier’s performance helped the Gophers sweep the Bulldogs for the first time since February 2004. It was the first shutout for Chartier of the season and the eighth of her Gopher career.
The Maroon and Gold compete against non-conference action this weekend as Niagara University visits Ridder Arena, Nov. 11-12. Both games are set for 1:07 p.m. Minnesota returns to WCHA action Nov. 17-18 as it competes in a home-and-home series against St. Cloud State.
