Minnesota Volleyball Remains at No. 9 in CSTV/AVCA Poll

The Minnesota volleyball team (25-7, 17-3) remained at No. 9 in the CSTV/AVCA poll on Monday Dec. 4. Minnesota had 1,015 points in this week’s poll.

Minnesota has now been in the top 10 for the last three weeks. The Golden Gophers first appeared in the top 10 on Nov. 20.

The Golden Gophers have been ranked in 73 of the last 81 top 25 polls dating back to the 2002 season. Minnesota has also been ranked the last 10 weeks. The Golden Gophers were ranked No. 22 in this year’s preseason poll.

This past week, Minnesota defeated Siena in three games in the first round, and St. John’s in five games in the second to advanced to the NCAA Regional in Gainesville, Fla.

Minnesota has now advanced to the NCAA Regionals in six of the last eight seasons. The Golden Gophers are one of only eight teams to make six or more NCAA Regional appearances since 1999.

There were five Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 this week. Penn State was the highest ranked team at No. 5, followed by No. 9 Minnesota, No. 10 Wisconsin, No. 16 Ohio State, and No. 18 Purdue. For the first time in the history of the conference, it has five teams in the NCAA Regional Finals. The Big Ten matches the Pac-10 for the most teams in the regional round. The Big 12 also has three teams, while the West Coast Conference has one, the SEC has one and the WAC has one.

Minnesota will face No. 7 Florida in the second match of the Gainesville Regional on Friday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. (CT). The first match of the night will feature No. 1 Nebraska against No. 14 San Diego. The winners of the two matches will play in the regional final on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. (CT).
