Minnesota Gains 53 Fall Big Ten All-Academic Accolades

The Big Ten Conference announced that 53 student-athletes from the University of Minnesota have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the fall season. Minnesota sports included in the fall were men’s and women’s cross country, football, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Football had 19 members named to the Big Ten All-Academic team, including First-Team All-Big Ten honoree and John Mackey Award finalist Matt Spaeth (St. Michael, Minn.)
Men’s Cross Country had six performers named to the Big Ten All-Academic team, highlighted by senior captain David Van Orsdel (Minnetonka, Minn.). Women’s Cross Country had 13 members named to the team, highlighted by a pair of All-Americans in Ladia Albertson-Junkans (Stillwater, Minn.) and Emily Brown (West Allis, Wis.).
Women’s soccer had six players named to the Big Ten All-Academic team, including Second-Team All-Big Ten midfielder Kelsey Hood (Ankeny, Iowa). The women’s volleyball team also had nine players receive the academic honors, highlighted by First-Team All-Big Ten middle blocker Meredith Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Malama Peniata (Plymouth, Minn.).
