Minnesota Breaks Losing Streak with 65-58 Win Over Indiana

Minnesota built a six point lead at 12-6 early in the game, fueled by three-point baskets from Kelly Roysland and April Calhoun. Indiana responded with a 7-0 run to claim the scoring lead at 13-12. Three of Indiana’s points in the run came on free throws. Calhoun dropped in a layup to bring the lead back to Minnesota at 14-13, but Indiana’s Angela Hawkins quickly scored to bring the Hoosiers ahead 15-14 with seven minutes, 40 seconds left in the half. Roysland sunk another three-point basket 23 seconds later to put the Gophers up by two points at 17-16. The Gophers would hold the lead for the remainder of the half.
At halftime, the Gophers were leading 26-22. Roysland was Minnesota’s scoring leader at the half with eight points, while Cyndi Valentin had nine points to lead Indiana.
The Hoosiers came out fighting in the second half, making the first two baskets, including a trey by Nikki Smith to take a 27-26 lead. Roysland responded with a three-pointer of her own to put Minnesota back in the lead 29-27. The hot three-point shooting continued as Smith sunk another three-pointer to give the Hoosiers the lead once again, this time at 30-29.
Minnesota fought back, going on a 16-5 run to build a 10 point lead at 45-35. Half of the Gophers’ 16 points in the run were scored by Jamie Broback. Minnesota continued to build its lead, eventually going up by 16 points at 56-40 after a Broback three-pointer.
Indiana whittled away at Minnesota’s 16-point lead, going on a 15-4 run to get within five points at 60-55 with one minute, 46 seconds left to play in the game. Calhoun led a 5-0 run to bring the Gophers’ lead back to double digits at 65-55 with 21 seconds on the clock. Nikki Smith made her fifth three-point basket of the game with seven second left to bring the final score to 65-48.
Three Gopher players scored in double figures, led by Broback’s 20 points. Calhoun tallied 12 points, and Roysland had 11 points. Broback notched a double- double, adding 11 rebounds to her 20 points. Broback also led her team with six assists.
Nikki Smith led Indiana with 18 points, including five three-point baskets. Jenny DeMuth was also in double figures with 14 points.
Minnesota wraps up the regular season with a home game against Northwestern on Sunday. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. in Williams Arena.
