Gophers Win 11 Events in Second Day of Minnesota Challenge

The eighth-ranked University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team competed in
its final regular season event today, at the Minnesota Challenge held in the University
Aquatic Center. It was the final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships, Feb. 23-25 in
Bloomington, Ind. Although no team scores were kept for the meet, Minnesota finished in
the top spot in all 11 events it competed in today.


The Gophers earned their first win in the 200 medley relay. The relay of Ales
Volcansek,
Colin Lee-To, Dan
Berve and Jason Timmer clocked a winning time of 1:
29.41. Russ Payne
won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:00.90, followed by Frisk
Driscoll in second in 4:
10.23. Adam Mitchell won the 100-yard butterfly event
with a time of 49.55, while Berve
finished second in 49.90 and Mike Natali in third with a time of 50.05.

fourth with a time of 50.33, while Anthony Portela placed fifth in a time
of 50.89.


Mike Holmes won the 1650 free with a time of 15:25. 36, while Travis Beckerle finished
second in 15:26.15. Zach Wood touched the wall in 15:45.53 for third place, followed by
Fabian Toth for fourth overall in 16:00.86.


Igor Cerensek won the 200 free with a time of 1:
37.87, while Michael Woodson placed
second overall in 1:39.68. Tyler Schmidt rounded out the top three with a
third-place time
of 1:39.69. Timmer touched the wall in 55.65 to win the 100-yard breaststroke, while
Drew Knoechel placed second in 56.22. Sean Kelly chipped in a time of 58.31
for third
place in the same event.


David Plummer won his first event of the day in
the 100 back with a time of 49.77. He
later added a first-place finish in the 200 back with a winning time of 1:49.69. Cerensek
also won his second event of the day, this time in the 100 free. Cerensek beat out
teammate Timmer with a winning time of 44.41, while Timmer clocked a time of 45.31.
Mario Delac placed third in the event with a time
of 45.48. Mitchell won the 200
breaststroke event in a time of 2:01.29, while Knoechel placed second in a time of 2:
03.05.


Minnesota had six swimmers place in the top six spots in the 200 fly event. Natali won the
event with a time of 1:49.64, while Hiro Sugimoto finished second in 1:50.86.

clocked a time of 1:52.87, good enough for third, followed by Driscoll in fourth (1:55.01),
Zach Wood in fifth (1:56.19) and Portela in sixth
