The No. 23 University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team finished the 2005-06 season with 48 points and a 21st-place finish at the NCAA Championships, tonight in Athens, Ga. Auburn came from behind and won the championship with 518.5 points while host institution Georgia finished second with a time of 515.5.

Yuen Kobayashi finished 10th in the 1,650-yard freestyle event. Kobayashi earned the Gophers seven points when she touched the wall in 16:19.44. Christine Jennings swam in the same event, placing 17th overall in a time of 16:30.67.

Minnesota's 400 free relay finished 15th overall in the prelims as well as the finals. The relay of Jenny Shaughnessy, Stacy Busack, Sarah Perrott and Meredith McCarthy combined for a finals time of 3:21.87.

Katie Wind finished the 200-yard backstroke with a 24th-place finish overall in the 200- yard backstroke. Wind clocked a time of 1:58.87 for 24th overall.

McCarthy led the Gophers in the 100 free event, placing 46th overall in a time of 50.59. Busack was close behind when she finished 50th overall in a time of 50.72, while Holtmeyer touched the wall in 50.91 and Shaughnessy finished in 50.92 in 51st place.

"We really made a statement this year," co-head coach Terry Nieszner said. "After not scoring last year and being able to be in the top-25 in the nation, we're happy with our performance. We were able to score in our relays and individual events and it shows that we are making great strides in our program."

Of the Gophers' 10 swimmers to qualify for the NCAA Championships this year, eight will be returning to the Minnesota squad next year. The NCAA Championships marks the end of collegiate careers for Wind and Perrott.
