Vega, Malmin Notch NCAA Qualifying Times at Oregon Invitational

Antonio Vega and Ryan Malmin posted NCAA qualifying times at the Oregon Invitational Distance Carnival on Friday night at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Vega, a junior, ran the ninth-fastest time in school history in the 10,000-meter run - 29 minutes, 17.91 seconds - to finish ninth and add his name to the list of provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. The 10,000 meters is not contested the NCAA regional championships and athletes qualify for the Championships with automatic or provisional times.
Malmin ran a time of 9:01.24 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, marking a personal best and an NCAA regional qualifier in the event. Malmin, a senior, has competed in the steeplechase twice this season, both on the Hayward Field track in Oregon.
Other top performances were contributed by freshman Ben Puhl and senior Ben Hanson. Puhl placed fourth in the Section C of the 3,000m steeplechase with a personal-best time of 9:17.03. Hanson clocked a season-best time in the 1,500-meter run, 3:49.37, to place 12th.
Trent Riter will compete in the 800-meter run at the Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
