Minnesota Swept in Two-Game Series against Illinois

The University of Minnesota softball team (12-27, 1-13) was swept in a two-game series against Illinois (21-25, 7-6) at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. Illinois used a seven-run sixth inning to claim the first game, 7-1. Claire DeVreese threw a five- hit shutout in a 4-0 win in the rematch to earn her second complete-game victory of the day.

In the first game, Illinois broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 7-1 win. With runners on first and second and one out, Kisten Marten launched a three-run home run over the left field wall off reliever Rene Konderik. On the next pitch, Molly Lawhead hit a solo home run over the centerfield wall. Illinois tacked on three more runs after starter Katie Dalen reentered the game.

The Golden Gophers got on the board after loading the bases for the second straight inning in the bottom of the seventh. Megan Higginbotham drove home Minnesota’s lone run on her ground out to third base.

DeVreese earned the complete-game victory after allowing an unearned run on five hits. Dalen took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits. She struck out five in the contest.

In the second game, Illinois jumped ahead with a run in the bottom of the third inning. With runners on second and third, Shanna Diller singled to right to bring home Rachelle Corridi from third. Diller accounted for Illinois’ second run when she scored on Kacey Coonce’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Illinois increased the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Marten and Lawhead drew back-to-back walks.

DeVreese allowed just five hits in the shutout while striking out two. Minnesota freshman Briana Hassett took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits. She struck out six.

The Golden Gophers return to action on Sunday when it hosts No. 16 Northwestern. The doubleheader will begin at Noon.
