Nischela Reddy Unanimously Selected to All-Big Ten Team
4/27/2006 12:00:00 AM | Tennis
One of seven unanimous selections, the conference honor is the second for Reddy in her career. A senior captain, Reddy finished the 2005-06 season with a 19-15 overall record, a 14-9 mark in dual matches and a 7-3 Big Ten record. Reddy was clearly Minnesota's top player this season, playing all but one of her 23 dual matches at the No. 1 singles position. She went 3-3 vs. ranked opponents this season with wins over then-Nos. 56, 68 and 97. In doubles matches, Reddy went 22-12 overall, 16-7 in dual matches and 5-5 in the Big Ten.
In addition to her All-Big Ten honor, Reddy was named Minnesota's 2006 Sportsmanship Award Honoree. To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have distinguished herself through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Reddy is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the Conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
Minnesota has placed a player on the All-Big Ten Team in each of the last 13 seasons. After their 4-3 loss to Penn State in the first round of the 2006 Big Ten Championship today, the Golden Gophers finished the 2005-06 campaign with a 5-18 overall record and a 2-8 mark in the Big Ten.
