University of Minnesota forward Danny Irmen (Fargo, N.D.) has decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility and has signed a professional contract with the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League (NHL). Irmen will join former Golden Gopher Erik Westrum in the Wild organization.

Irmen, a junior forward, earned his second consecutive All-WCHA Third Team honor this past season with totals of 16-22--38 to rank fourth on the team in scoring. An assistant captain, Irmen missed 11 games with injuries, but made his presence felt when appearing in the lineup. Out of 30 games, he was held without a point in only seven contests. He had 11 multi-point games and four multi-goal games this past season.

During his sophomore campaign, Irmen finished second on the team in scoring with 24-19--43, earning the team’s John Mariucci Co-Most Valuable Player award. He led all Golden Gopher rookies in 2003-04 with totals of 14-8--22. Irmen stands in 71st place on Minnesota’s all-time list for career points with 54-49--103, and 44th on the school’s career goals chart with 54.

Irmen was drafted by the Minnesota with 78th overall pick in the third round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He becomes the second Golden Gopher to leave school early for the NHL this offseason after Ryan Potulny signed with the Philadelphia Flyers last week.
