The University of Iowa softball team (23-14, 4-2) handed Minnesota (11-20, 0-6) its ninth straight loss by a final score of 3-0 in Iowa City on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Gophers were shut out for the fourth straight game, the longest streak since the 1990 season.

Iowa did not register a hit against Golden Gopher starter Katie Dalen until the top of the sixth inning when Emily Nichols led off with a single up the middle. With runners on first and second with two outs, Emily Gerlick doubled to right center off reliever Briana Hassett to bring home a pair of runs. Iowa added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on Nichols’ sacrifice fly.

For the second straight day, Minnesota could not generate any offense against Iowa freshman Brittany Weil. She allowed one hit in the game, a single by true freshman Colleen Conway in the third inning. Weil finished with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Dalen took the loss for Minnesota after being credited with two runs allowed on just one hit in 5.1 innings.

The Golden Gophers will travel to Madison, Wis., for a Sunday doubleheader against the Wisconsin Badgers. The first game will begin at Noon.
