Golden Gophers Announce Team Awards

Senior Shannon Schonrock was named the Golden Gophers’ most valuable player as team awards were announced at the Minnesota women’s basketball annual team banquet on Sunday. Schonrock was the first three-year team captain in program history and finished her career as the record holder for three-point field goals with 230. She earned Academic All-District honors the last two season, was a 2005 All-Big Ten Honorable Mention pick and the 2006 Minnesota recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Seniors Shannon Bolden and April Calhoun were repeat honorees in their respective awards. Bolden was named the Best Defensive Player for the third consecutive season, while Calhoun is a three-year winner of the Most Outstanding Scholar Award.

Senior Hannah Garry was honored with the Coaches’ Award, while Natasha Williams was named as the team’s Most Improved Player.

The women’s basketball booster club, the Fast Break Club, annually bestows a pair of awards at the team banquet. Junior Kelly Roysland was the 2006 recipient of the Fast Break Award. Senior Christina Collison was honored with the Love of the Game Award.

Sixth Player Awards were given to Fast Break members Sylvia Hesse and Karen Lueck.

Minnesota finished the season with a 19-10 record, 11-5 and tied for third in the Big Ten Conference. The Golden Gophers also advanced to their fifth straight NCAA Tournament.
