The Minnesota men’s track & field team scored points in the hammer throw and 10,000-meter run as the Golden Gophers opened competition at the Big Ten Conference Championships in East Lansing, Mich., on Friday.

Sophomore Chris Hudspith landed a career-best throw of 178 feet, 5 inches in the hammer to place fifth. Hudspith entered the meet seeded 14th. Teammate Adam Schnaible, who was seeded third, was unable to throw due to an injury.

Junior Antonio Vega added a sixth-place showing in the 10,000-meter run. Vega was clocked at 29 minutes, 46.18 seconds. Junior David VanOrsdel finished 22nd in a time of 31:33.68.

Ohio State leads the team standings after the first day with 17 points. Minnesota is sixth with seven.

The Championships continue on Saturday with a full slate of preliminary races and finals in several events. A highlight of Saturday’s schedule is the discus competition where Golden Gopher senior Karl Erickson will attempt to become the first Minnesota athlete to win four Big Ten titles in the same individual event.
