ACCEPTING PRIZE MONEY
NCAA Bylaw 12.1.1.4.1 allows prospective student-athletes, prior to their first enrollment in college, to accept prize money at open events up to the amount of reasonable expenses for that event. However, prize money may only be provided by the event sponsor. The acceptance of prize money beyond the amount of actual expenses results in a forfeiture of the athlete’s amateur status.
Acceptance of prize money after an athlete begins college will result in a forfeiture of eligibility. Current student-athletes do not get the same benefit of prospects of being able to accept prize money up to their expenses.
If you have any questions, please contact the Compliance Office.
