The Story of Patty Berg
Female Student-Athletes Supported in Berg’s Name Minneapolis native and golf legend Patty Berg is remembered for her lifelong dedication to the sport. Berg’s competitive career began by capturing the Minneapolis City Championship in 1934 at age 16, the first of 29 victories during an illustrious amateur career. After turning professional in 1940, Berg went on to help establish the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association in 1948 and eventually won 57 tournaments on the LPGA tour.

Berg was honored with numerous awards throughout her career for her outstanding athletic achievements and sportsmanship. In 1978, the LPGA created the Patty Berg Award, given annually to the female golfer who has made exceptional contributions to women’s golf throughout the year.

The Berg Fund
The University of Minnesota established the Berg Scholarship Fund in 1976, which helps to secure annual donations and endowed gifts to support scholarships for female student-athletes. Berg scholarships help cover tuition, textbook fees, and room and board.
