Katie Dalen and Rene Konderik combined on a three-hit shutout as the Golden Gopher softball team defeated South Dakota State, 4-0, at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. Minnesota will conclude its 2006 season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Noon against the Jackrabbits.

The Golden Gophers were perfect in the field as they collected their fifth shutout of the season. Senior Stefanie Watt kept the game scoreless in the top of the third inning. With a runner on first, Steph Kuhl sent a ball to the gap, but Watt cut it off to hold her to a long single and to keep Brooke Postma from scoring.

Minnesota broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth inning. Megan Higginbotham led off with a single and advanced to third on an error on Valerie Alston’s bunt. She would come home to score on Katie Meyer’s fly ball to center.

The Golden Gophers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on first and third, Alston laced a two-run triple to right center. Alston then scored on a wild pitch.

Higginbotham finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while true freshman Colleen Conway finished with a pair of singles and a run scored.

Dalen earned the win after allowing just three hits in six-plus innings. She struck out five. Konderik closed out the game in the seventh.
