Gopher gymnast Jake Lee, who will be a senior this fall, is one of 99 gymnasts who will compete this weekend at the U.S. Men’s Qualifier on July 15. The meet will take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and is the last chance to qualify for competition at the 2006 Visa Championships. Lee will attempt to be one of 27 senior division athletes to advance to the Visa Championships.

The one-day qualifying competition features two sessions, 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Both junior and senior men compete in both sessions, and after the conclusion of the second session, the determination will be made about which athletes will advance to the 2006 Visa Championships, which will be held Aug. 16-19, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

"Jake has been training hard for both the qualifier and the Visa Championships this summer," said Gopher head coach Mike Burns. "Jake was the Gopher's Most Valuable Gymnast in 2006, and he not only has a great shot of qualifying to the Visa Championships, but I believe he has a very good shot at making the Senior National Team this year."

If Lee advances past this weekend’s qualifying meet, he will join former Gopher gymnasts Guillermo Alvarez and Clay Strother, who have already qualified for the competition, as Visa Championship participants with a tie to the University of Minnesota gymnastics program.

The Visa Championships feature the United States' best gymnasts vying for national titles in men's and women's artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics, as well as qualifying for the respective U.S. national teams.
