Gophers Finish First Two Days of the Speedo Champion Series

Jennifer Chang started the meet with a third-place finish in the 100-meter freestyle event. Chang chipped in a junior national qualifying time of 58.50. Erin O'Neil competed in the 200 fly and made the A Final and held a time of 2:21.26. Both Chang and O'Neil, along with Yuen Kobayashi all competed in the 200 free. Kobayashi clocked an Olympic qualifying time of 2:02.85 to place second overall. O'Neil followed as she placed third in a time of 2:06.06, while Chang touched the wall in 2:06.64, tying for seventh overall. Valerie Tukey held a preliminary time of 2:08.41 and bettered her time to 2:06.30 to win the consolation finals.
Jenny Hasling placed fifth in the 100 back in a Open qualifying time of 1:06.54, while former Gopher Katie Wind placed fourth overall in a time of 1:06.35.
Minnesota had two relays place in the top seven in the 400 free relay. The Minnesota A relay of Chang, Erin Holtmeyer, Jenny Shaughnessy and O'Neil won the event when they combined for a time of 3:53.93, which set a meet record and established an Open qualifying time. Minnesota's B relay of Hasling, Stacy Busack, Sharon Leary and Lindsey St. Martin added a time of 4:00.94 to place seventh overall.
Action continues at the Aquatic Center for the next two days. Events included in the two days are the 200 back, 400 free, 100 breast and fly, 800 free relay, 200 individual medley, 1500 free, 50 free and the 400 medley relay.
