Jakits and Kennedy Qualify for USA Nationals

Senior University of Minnesota divers Holly Jakits (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Shaun Kennedy (Brainerd, Minn.) have qualiifed for the USA Diving Nationals that will be held in Indianapolis August 2-5. Jakits advanced on the 10-meter platform while Kennedy qualified on the 10-meter platform and in the 3-meter synchronized event. Jakits and Kennedy qualified at the USA Diving Senior Zone A Championships in Indianapolis in July.

Jakits placed third on the 10-meter platform with a score of 239.40. She maintained her third place position from the preliminaries where she posted a score of 243.90. The top five finishers in the event advanced to Nationals.

Kennedy finished fifth on the 10-meter platform with a tally of 247.30. He improved from a sixth place finish in the preliminaries. Kennedy later teamed with Stanford's Kevin McLean to place second in the 3-meter synchronized diving event with a score of 257.85 to earn a spot at Nationals. Kennedy's team edged Gopher teammate Cole Young and Nathan Kim, who took third with 251.70 points. The top two synchro teams earned spots at Nationals.

In other action by Gopher divers at the Zone Championships, Brianna Hubbard placed 14th on the 1-meter board with a score of 155.30 and ninth on the 3- meter board with a tally of 199.20. Hubbard also teamed with Alexandra Barstad to finish fourth in 3-meter synchronized. On the men's side, Young took 14th on the 3-meter with a score of 255.70 and 18th on the 1-meter (212.50). Kennedy also finished 12th on the 1-meter with a score of 236.90.
