La'Cassie Advances to Round of 32 at US Amateur

Golden Gopher men's golfer Bronson La'Cassie won his first round match in the United States Amateur today in Chaska, 3 and 2 over Andres Echavarria of Columbia. With the win, La'Cassie equals his best finish of his career in a US Amateur. He advanced to the Round of 32 in 2004 before losing to Nicholas Thompson 3 and 2 at Winged Foot Golf Club (N.Y.).

La'Cassie dropped the first hole to Echavarria and was immediately 1 Down in the match. He made the match all square after Echavarria bogeyed the par 4, 5th. La'Cassie went on a run winning the next three holes to build a 3 up lead. He birdied the par 4, 6th hole and was the benefactor of back-to-back Echavarria bogeys on holes 7 and 8. La'Cassie lost the 10th hole, but birdied the 606-yard par 5 11th to regain a 3 Up lead. His par on the 247-yard, par 3, 13th pressed the match to 4 Up adn he coasted home from there.

La'Cassie will face Mark Strickland at 11:40 a.m. tomorrow at Hazeltine National.

Former Gopher Antti Ahokas won his first round match, 4 and 2 over Rhys Davies of Wales. He will face Richie Ramsay of Scotland tomorrow at 12:10 p.m.
