Engel Leads Gophers On Third Day At U.S. Nationals

University of Minnesota junior Matt Engel led Minnesota on the third day of competition at the ConocoPhillips National Championships in Irvine, Calif. The Nashotah, Wis. native had an impressive swim in the 100-meter butterfly, finishing 24th overall. The meet continues through Sunday, Aug. 5.

Engel clocked a prelim time of 55.50 to advance to the C Final with the last qualifying spot. Although he did not score at the event at the Big Ten Championships, he posted the fifth-best time among Big Ten competitors in the event. He clocked a time of 55.66 in the evening session to finish 24th overall. Senior Dan Berve (Papillion, Neb.) finished 39th overall with a prelim time of 56.00.

In the only other men's individual event of the day, the 50 freestyle, Engel again led the Gophers with a 39th place finish in 23.63. Sophomore Colin Lee-To (Excelsior, Minn.) placed 49th in 23.84, junior Tyler Schmidt (Topeka, Kan.) took 53rd in 23.88 and junior Mike Woodson (St. Louis, Mo.) finished 63rd in 24.10.

Tomorrow's events include the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley and 1500-meter freestyle. Former Gopher All-American Justin Mortimer was the 1500 free champion at U.S. Spring Nationals in April.
