Golden Gopher senior Emily Brown placed third to pace the Minnesota women’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish in the Jack Johnson Women’s Gold Race at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn., on Saturday.
UC Santa Barbara raced to its first Griak title, collecting 87 team points, while grabbing first, second and sixth places in the individual standings. Senior Stephanie Rothstein edged teammate and fellow senior Lauren Christman at the finish line to capture Griak medalist honors. Both runners were clocked in 21 minutes, 13 seconds.
Arizona State finished second in the team standings with 108 points, Baylor third with 120 and Minnesota fourth with 137. A year ago, the Gophers finished second in the Griak with a higher team score (156).
Brown was third in 21:17 over the soggy, rain-soaked 6-kilometer course. Brown improved on her ninth-place showing at the Griak a year ago. Junior Ladia Albertson-Junkans added an eighth-place finish for the Gophers, clocking a time of 21:41.
Three freshman completed the Gophers’ scoring as Jamie Cheever finished 18th in 21:51, Elizabeth Yetzer in 50th in 22:32 and Amy Laskowske in 67th in 22:48.
“We had some people like Jamie Cheever and Amy Laskowske run outstanding races, but as a team we didn’t have a solid, consistent effort today,” stated Golden Gopher head coach Gary Wilson. “The good news is that we have a lot of room to improve and it’s early in the season. With a young team, every race is a learning experience.”
Overall, 30 teams and 288 runners competed in the Jack Johnson Women’s Gold Race.
