Emily Brown captured medalist honors to lead the Minnesota women’s cross country team to the crown of the South Dakota State Classic in Brookings, S.D., on Saturday. The Golden Gophers claimed the top four individual places to record a near-perfect team score of 18 (15 is perfect) and easily defend their Classic title.
Brown covered the 5-kilometer course in a time of 17 minutes, 8.70 seconds to win by 10 seconds and capture her second individual race title this season. Ladia Albertson-Junkans finished second in a time of 17:18.50. A year ago, Albertson-Junkans was first and Brown was second.
Elizabeth Yetzer edged Jamie Cheever for third place with Yetzer being clocked at 17:27.10 and Cheever at 17:27.70. Completing the scoring for the Gophers was Heather Dorniden in eighth place in a time of 17:59.05.
“We wanted to work on running better as a pack and with seven finishers in the top 13 positions, we took good strides toward our goal,” said Golden Gopher head coach Gary Wilson. “We obviously pleased to win as a team. Emily Brown ran another outstanding race to take the individual title.”
Also gathering top-20 finishes for Minnesota were Gabriele Anderson in 11th posting a time of 18:05.30 and Any Laskowske in 13th in 18:09.10.
