White Team Defeats Maroon in Golden Gophers Intersquad Game

Senior Sean Kommerstad (Minnetonka, Minn.) homered three times and drove in five runs, as the White team defeated the Maroon team 11-3 in the Minnesota Baseball Intersquad Game on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Siebert Field.

Kommerstad finished the game four-for-five with three home runs, three runs and five RBI. Mike Mee (Richfield, Minn.) also reached base four times, and was two-for-three with two runs, a double and four RBI. Aaron Larson (Lakeville, Minn.) and Joe Maciej (Elk River, Minn.) also had two hits on the day for the White team.

Tijl Vanderwege (St. Paul, Minn.) led the Maroon team, reaching base three times, going two-for-three with two RBI. Derek McCallum (Maple Grove, Minn.) was also two-for-four with a run and an RBI. Tom Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) and Kyle Baran (Apple Valley, Minn.) also had two hits for the Maroon team.

Kyle Carr (Linton, N.D.) started and gave up one hit, two runs and struck out four in two innings of work. Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) started for the White team and gave up three hits, two runs and struck out four in two innings of work.

Gary Perinar (Shorewood, Ill.) pitched two shutout innings, gave up one hit and struck out three batters. Tom Buske (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Larson also pitched two shutout innings for the Golden Gophers.

Josh Oslin (Mora, Minn.) gave up three hits, one run and struck out two batters in two innings of work. Marcus McKenzie (Minnetonka, Minn.) also gave up four hits, one run and struck out two batters in two innings.

In the bottom of the first inning, the White team jumped on the board on a two-run homer by Kommerstad to make it 2-0.

The Maroon team evened the score in the top of the second with two runs of its own. Nick Biagini (Maplewood, Minn.) started things with two outs when he was hit by a pitch. McCallum reached on a bad-hop single to make it first and second. Biagini and McCallum came home to score on a two-run triple by Vanderwege to tie the score at 2-2.

It remained tied until the top of the sixth inning when the Maroon team took its first lead of the game. Freshman Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) led off with a double to center field. Knudson moved to third on a ground out, and came around to score when McCallum hit hard ground ball that bounced away from the first baseman to bring him home to make the score 3-2.

Kommerstad led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his second home run of the game to tie the score at 3-3.

The White team moved back ahead 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Drew Hanish (McKinney, Texas) singled to lead off the inning, and moved to third when Larson reached on a bunt single. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and eventually scored on a one-out two-run single by Mee to make it 5-3.

In the bottom of the eighth the White team added six more runs to its lead to move to the final scored of 11-3. Dan Lyons (Rochester, Minn.) brought home the first run when he was hit with the bases loaded to make it 6-3. John Arlt (Lakeville, Minn.) scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch to make it 7-3. Mee added a two-run double to put the White team up 9-3. Kommerstad finished the scoring with his third home run of the day to centerfield.

Minnesota will start its 2007 season on Friday, Feb. 23 when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to face UNC-Asheville at 12 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also host the Pro-Alumni Game on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 3:05 p.m.
