EVALUATION OF A PROSPECT DURING VISITS – TRYOUT RULE
NCAA Bylaw 13.11 covers tryout and evaluation issues. Coaches may not conduct or observe any physical activity where a prospective student-athlete displays their athletic ability or talent in terms of speed, strength, agility, flexibility etc., for evaluation purposes. We have had problems over the past few years regarding activities the prospect participates in during their official visit to campus, a summary of the restrictions are indicated below:

EVALUATION OF A PROSPECT DURING VISITS – TRYOUT RULE
NCAA Bylaw 13.11 covers tryout and evaluation issues. Coaches may not conduct or observe any physical activity where a prospective student-athlete displays their athletic ability or talent in terms of speed, strength, agility, flexibility etc., for evaluation purposes. We have had problems over the past few years regarding activities the prospect participates in during their official visit to campus, a summary of the restrictions are indicated below:
- A student-athlete who is not enrolled, but has been accepted for admission in a full time academic program may participate in pre-season practices and competition in fall sports and practices between academic terms (13.11.2.1).
- A prospect who is visiting the U of M may participate in a recreational activity, such as a pickup game of basketball or a game of flag football, so long as it is not observed or organized by any athletic staff members (13.11.2.2).
- Prospects may participate in “open” events such as a Minneapolis-area 3-on-3 basketball tournament held on campus, so long as the event is truly “open” and not limited except by number, geographic area or on the basis of performance level (13.11.3.2).
