Gopher Gymnasts Face Illinois In Home Opener

GOPHERS HOST SEASON OPENER AGAINST ILLINOIS
The Gopher men’s gymnastics team will face Illinois in their home opener this Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.

GOPHER TAKE FOURTH AT WINDY CITY INVITE
The Golden Gopher men's gymnastics team placed fourth out of six teams at the Windy City Classic in Chicago, Ill., with a score of 205.65. Michigan won the meet with a score of 212.75, while Illinois took second with a 209.75, Ohio State placed third with a 209.50, and Iowa (198.40) and Illinois-Chicago (196.15) placed behind Minnesota in fifth and sixth respectively. As a team, the Gophers had the second-highest team score on pommel horse and still rings, while registering the fourth-highest total on parallel bars and high bars. Individually, Jake Lee placed second in the all-around with a score of 51.75, while Andre Berry placed ninth in the all-around with a score of 47.30. Kit Beikmann had the Gophers' highest score on pommel horse with an 8.95, while Cole Storer had a second place finish on vault to lead the Maroon and Gold with a mark of 8.85.

A LOOK BACK
The last time the Gophers met Illinois in dual action was on Jan. 21, 2006. Minnesota fell at Illinois in the team’s first dual meet of the season, 207.300-201.650. Jake Lee highlighted the night for the Gophers by claiming his first all-around title of the season, posting a score of 49.950.
Lee also claimed the vault title for the Gophers, scoring a 9.20 to place first. Lee tied teammate Steve Vuong for second on horse with a mark of 8.20 and was second on rings with a score of 8.850. Lee was third on parallel bars with a score of 8.70 and was fifth on high bar with an 8.50. Other Gopher gymnasts with standout performances included Eddie Campbell, who had the Gophers top score on floor with an 8.65 and Gus Roethlisberger, who tallied an 8.55 on floor to finish fifth and was fourth on vault with a 9.05. Justin Meyer gave the Gophers a top-five performance on pommel horse, taking fifth with an 8.05. Joe Moore was third on rings with a score of 8.65. Sergei Dmitriev was second on parallel bars with an 8.75, which represented the Gophers’ highest score of the night. Dmitriev also had the team’s highest mark on the high bar with a score of 8.75, placing third. While the Gophers lost the meet to Illinois, they also lost Adam Reichow for extended time due to a possible broken fibula.
