OUTSIDE COMPETITION
Big Ten Rule 17.02.9 states that all student-athletes must receive written approval from the athletics director prior to competing in an outside competition. The NCAA and Big Ten define competition as a pre-scheduled game or tournament in any sport governed by the NCAA. If there are officials/referees, uniforms, scores kept – any of these can make even the most informal event count as a competition.
The form for outside competition approval can be found on the compliance website.
University of Minnesota policy requires student-athletes that are not representing the U of M to complete this form any time they are competing in an outside competition in any sport during the academic year. Remember that the outside competition rules continue to apply until the last day of final exams (May 12, 2007).
