Gophers, Mavericks Face off in DQ Cup Weekend Series

MINNEAPOLIS— The University of Minnesota Gophers and Minnesota State University Mavericks men’s hockey teams usher in the New Year with round two of their inter-state rivalry and renewal of the battle for the DQ Cup this weekend. It was a great match-up in early December when the two teams fought to a draw on Friday night and the Gophers won by a single goal on Saturday.
The two teams meet on Friday night in Mankato and on Sunday in Minneapolis. The Gophers are in the midst of the nation’s longest unbeaten streak at 20 games (17-0-3) and are also unbeaten (3-0-3) in the quest for their second straight DQ Cup. They lead the four Minnesota-based WCHA teams with a .750 mark. Minnesota State Mavericks are in third place with a .583 winning percentage (3-2-1) and have won 3 of their last four games. St. Cloud State is second at .667 (3-1-2) with its own unbeaten streak of 13 games.
The 2006-07 DQ Cup battle remains interesting as every single match up between University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, Minnesota State University Mankato Mavericks and St. Cloud State Huskies counts on the road to the cup. The team that posts the best winning percentage earns the privilege of hoisting the traveling hardware in year two of the competition.
The schedule for remaining DQ Cup games for the 2006-2007 season includes the following:
