Jon Roberts Named To United States National Team

University of Minnesota junior Jon Roberts (Charlotte, N.C.) was recently named to the United States National Team by USA Swimming. The National Team is composed of athletes who post the top six times in Olympic events swum in finals from the World Championships, Pan Am Games, World University Games and Nationals.

Roberts is one of only two current Big Ten swimmers on the National Team. He joins Indiana senior Ben Hesen, who was named to the team in the 100-meter backstroke.

Roberts is one of six swimmers named to the National Team for the 100-meter breaststroke. He joins world record holder and multiple Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen, Mark Gangloff, Scott Usher, Eric Shanteau and Ryan Lochte. Roberts clocked a time of 1:00.82 at the Japan International Grand Prix, a time that currently ranks fifth among American swimmers.

Since transferring to Minnesota from defending national champion Auburn after the 2006-07 season, Roberts has burst on the national swimming scene. He posted a fifth place finish at the U.S. Summer Nationals in Indianapolis in the 100 breaststroke. His performance earned him a spot on the Team USA roster at the Japan International Grand Prix in Chiba, Japan where he finished third in a blazing 1:00.82, which was the 10th-fastest time in the world at the time. He won three events at the USA Swimming Speedo Champions Series event at University Aquatic Center in July. He currently owns Olympic Trials cut times in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley.
